DoD Announces Successor to Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Working Group

Assistant Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks, working closely with the Director of National Intelligence, asked the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security to establish within the USDO (I&S) office the Group Airborne Object Identification and Management Synchronization (AOIMSG) as the successor to the US Navy Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Working Group. The AOIMSG will synchronize the efforts of the Department and the broader United States government to detect, identify and assign objects of interest in Special Use Airspace (SUA), and to assess and mitigate any threats associated with the safety of aircraft. theft and national security. To provide oversight of the AOIMSG, the Deputy Secretary also instructed the USD (I&S) to lead an Airborne Object Identification and Management Executive Council (AOIMEXEC) made up of members of the DoD and the intelligence community. , and provide a venue for interagency representation of the US government. .

Incursions of any airborne object into our SUA pose flight and operational safety concerns, and can pose national security concerns. DOD takes reports of incursions – by any aerial object, identified or unidentified – very seriously and investigates each. This decision is the result of planning and collaborative efforts by the OUD (I&S) and other elements of the DoD under the leadership of Assistant Secretary Hicks, to address the challenges associated with assessing the UAP se producing on or near DOD ranges and facilities highlighted in the preliminary DNI assessment report submitted to Congress in June 2021. The report also identified the need to improve processes, policies, technologies and training to improve our ability to understand UAP.

Over the next few weeks, the Ministry will release implementation guidelines, which will contain further details on the AOIMSG director, organizational structure, authorities and resources.
