New technology introduced to help prevent impaired driving

US Senator Richard Blumenthal has said that about 40% of all deaths on our roads, all crashes, are due to impaired drivers.

HAMDEN, Connecticut – Erin and Larry Hermann lost their son Kyle to a drug-impaired driver in 2018.

“As he got stuck in a car with severe damage to the front and to the neighborhood, it was engulfed in flames, and the rescue had to be abandoned, and the fire burned uncontrollably for 20 minutes, “Erin said of that horrible day.

Her dreams and those of her husband are often haunted by the death of their son in this violent accident, she said.

“As the chief of police told us every time we saw him, our son’s death was completely preventable,” Erin added.

Sadly, the Hermanns aren’t the only ones with stories like this. They are part of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization.

Despite the grief, the Hermanns celebrate the provisions of the recently passed infrastructure bill. It will require all new vehicles to incorporate anti-drunkenness and impaired driving technology.

“It’s not a breathalyzer, it’s big, not a lock, it’s all passive. The average driver won’t even know he’s there,” Hermann said.

New vehicles should have this preventative technology within three years, according to Senator Blumenthal.

“It will slow down, stop or immobilize cars before they cause a tragedy and prevent the driver from injuring or killing people,” he said.

Blumenthal said more than 9,400 lives could be saved each year thanks to this new law.
