The Internet was fundamentally designed to connect machines, not people.

Over the eons, the intersection of market and human engagement has been where humans love to play and explore the possible. From early hominids bartering around the campfire or haggling in old village open-air markets, to online e-commerce, banking and finance, we dream and visualize what we could generate, then we we engage in exchange to make it happen. We meet new people, negotiate the prices and terms of a deal, and in short, create and build from the engagement. The “hardness” and durability of the currency, as well as any intermediation or brokering of engagement, profoundly affects the quality of our mutual engagement. Therefore, the “hardness” of money and the actual “conception of engagement” have everything to do with our quality of life and provide the trajectory of our progress and development. This is of paramount importance as we move forward into the digital age where tomorrow’s market, commerce and financial integration in gaming and social media engagement design dematerialize analog commerce and develop huge global digital economies.

However, things are not looking very good at the moment. Legacy and centralized industrial design have migrated from analog to new digital platforms. We now realize that this powerful adjustment of old design to new technologies has broad social and public health implications.

The “skeuomorphic design” as explained in a presentation by Andreas Antonopolous, one of the early evangelists of Bitcoin, is when the shadow of the existing legacy design is superimposed on a whole new technology involuntarily reproduce the past. Andreas used the example of the steering mechanism on the first automobile. He asked his audience: What was the first design used to steer the wheels of the novel “Horseless Car?” “You have to laugh, it’s so obvious” skeuomorphically “: the horse reins!

The takeaway from this invaluable presentation by Andreas is that we frequently continue to think and behave in scripted and stereotypical ways as new technologies emerge; and because we haven’t creatively explored the possible correlations with it, we logically overlap the comfortably familiar; we overlay the old design on top of what’s new and potentially revolutionary, stifling its potential. We will continue to do so at the expense of our health, safety, and individual and collective costs, unless we do this first. value then design with recreational wisdom, seeking biomimetic alignment with essential human biological design. The design which openly or covertly forces the square peg into a round hole for control and profit is nothing less than the arrogance of man dominating nature, as opposed to playing and designing in harmony with it.

So from this old maid’s point of view, that’s the huge deficit of much of today’s software and application design, and quite frankly, why I’m writing this series of “Satoshi’s Seed” articles and sound the alarm bells. Contemporary design, regardless of advancements and technological breakthroughs, often overlaps with a centralized, skeuomorphic industrial design, unable to effectively recreate itself (please refer to my previous article: “Bitcoin’s Satoshi’s Seed: From Descartes To Quantum Play”) .

Unfortunately, this narrowness of heritage thinking has been further exacerbated and improved by the actual digitization of engineering and design itself. Research from NASA’s JPL indicates that the best and most creative problem-solving engineers and designers were not those tireless “young geniuses” with impeccable credentials at MIT who had learned their high-tech engineering skills on a job. two-dimensional screen. It turns out that JPL’s superstar engineers and designers, the best creative thinkers and problem solvers, were the ones with a rich foundation developed from creative problem solving in the real three-dimensional world; the “handymen” of the real world. Neuroscientific research supports rich hand-eye experiences by enhancing multidimensional problem-solving.

Today we have this beautifully rare, decentralized, immutable digital Bitcoin protocol that fills us with hope. We cling tightly to the vision of a more self-reliant internet, in which products, services and experiences are tailored to who we are and what we are for. we want and aspire, rather than what our centralized programmers tell us to be, then measure and validate us. Bitcoin has been described as a revolutionary technology, an equivalent of “digital fire”, the purest thermodynamic energy ever available to humans. How will Bitcoin Layer 2 and 3 app developers and designers do it? Are they just going to throw ‘horse reins’ over it to keep us going and hope for the best? If not, then what is the meta-design for decentralized and distributed applications and solutions that will not only complement but exponentially transform the base of Bitcoin protocols into the revolutionary decentralized and empowering user-based Internet that we all want?

I submit that the solution to the skeuomorphic design is not simply technological, or forcing the user to restrict their use of existing platforms, but a personalized recreational integration of the exploration of the possible: play! We need to design digitally for biological analog, self-sovereign identity, and can only do this effectively by knowing and studying the analog world and the nature of its diverse biological conception. We must not only decentralize money and financial systems, but decentralize digital programming itself by integrating interdisciplinary knowledge and approaches while focusing on customization to empower each unique individual. Thus, unlike the behavioral social control of centralized programming, a recreational self-sovereign identity goes beyond not only user control and ownership of data, its transportability and interoperability, but identification, matching and scaffolding on the intrinsic motivations of each individual. If humans are to be sovereign and free themselves from centralized digital slavery, each of us must self-create and direct our own programming by recreating our unique self-sovereign identity. And as each of us already knows, our individual identity, who we are, is not made up only of objective and historical data.

Some older people, or those with a strong internal locus of control, may ridicule the sensitivity many young people feel today and their focus on their “feelings.” Consider this: maybe their behavior is just compensation for their lifelong “measured and managed” programming where they have been valued for compliance and hard data, not Who they are or aspire to become. These young adults know on a deep visceral level that the foundational part of their essential self has been hijacked and suppressed and is now seemingly vacant and missing. We all need access to developing our personal sovereignty and identifying our meaning and purpose in life. This can happen when the conception of engagement is disintermediated and we have direct access to a genuine self-generated, self-motivated and self-sustaining engagement so fundamental to self-sovereign development. Until then, we are captured and enslaved by centralized programming.

I think the time is right and Bitcoin can fix this problem.
